The Number One Business Lesson Every Entrepreneur Needs To Know

| Mary Shores

If you work in business, I wholeheartedly believe there’s a lesson you always need to remember. Whether you work for a Fortune 500 company, own a small business or have a side hustle, this lesson applies. It applies to almost all industries as well. This lesson will be your key to success, no matter what you do or where you work.

So, let me tell you this secret lesson: growth is essential. It’s everything in business.

Let me explain what I mean. When I was in my early 20s, I started my collection agency and did pretty much every job by myself. That said, I realized early on that if I wanted to sustain more revenue, I would have to grow my business, so that’s exactly what I did.

As I saw room for growth, I hired more employees and expanded my operations. I invested more in professional development for both my employees and myself. I got new software and hired third-party vendors when we needed it for our growth.

The result?

  • My revenue increased.

  • My employees and I were able to set and achieve more and more goals—none of which would have been possible if I had stayed a one-woman operation.

  • I was able to launch my communication training company, which has always been my passion.

In other words, pursuing growth allowed me to scale my collection agency and build a second business as well.

It’s one thing for me to tell you that growth is important. It’s another thing entirely to give you the tools to make that growth happen. Let’s dive right into how to prime your business for growth and choose growth when your business is ready for the next level.

What is the growth mindset?

When it comes to running a business, we can learn a lot about team onboarding, acquisition, and other growth techniques from books, influencers, articles, and other resources. That said, none of that matters if you don’t have a growth mindset to begin with.

If you have a growth mindset, you’re thinking in terms of the next level at all times. For example, when I was first growing my business, I saw myself as the “million-dollar” version of myself, which meant I was making decisions that the “million-dollar” business owner would make, which positioned me for growth.

The truth is, your business won’t grow from luck; it will grow when you’re prepared to take on new opportunities—even opportunities that are well out of your comfort zone. Eventually, when you have a growth mindset, you get used to taking big leaps, looking at the next level, hiring new employees, and pursuing new business ideas.

If you don’t embrace a growth mindset, big opportunities will be daunting, and it may take even longer to situate yourself in the path of future growth.

Take the growth mindset beyond your business goals.

Here’s a challenge that can help you develop and maintain a growth mindset:

Start thinking in terms of growth in all aspects of life. For example, maybe you want to invest in personal development, and you keep telling yourself there’s no extra time in the day or it’s too hard. If you use the growth mindset in this case, you can start making decisions about your personal development by putting yourself in your future self’s shoes.

Ask yourself who you want to be or what goals outside of your business you have. Then, start making decisions in your life as if you’ve already achieved these goals. In no time, you’ll start to grow in all aspects of life, and your business growth will be that much easier as well because at that point, growth will be natural for you.

Find your passion.

One last tip for investing in your growth is to know what you’re passionate about and pursue that in all aspects of life. This will make growth more rewarding and appealing.

In my life, I’ve always been passionate about neuroscience and the power of words. As a result, I started implementing the concepts I learned from researching neuroscience in all aspects of my life, which allowed me to grow my collection agency, start my communication business and maintain growth across the board.

When each aspect of your life is in sync, getting to that next level in your business is the logical way to go. So, pursue your passion, get into the growth mindset, and watch your business plans unfold.
